Triads within Each Zone

Each note of the major scale has a different triad chord built on top of it. These are listed here, where the Roman numeral give the scale degree, followed by the chord type, and followed by an example from the key of C major:

  • I – Major – C maj
  • II – Minor – D min
  • III – Minor – E min
  • IV – Major – F maj
  • V – Major – G maj
  • VI – Minor – A min
  • VII – diminished – B dim

In each zone, the pattern of zones for each chord is different, just as we saw for scales. Below are the chord forms for each zone, presented in ascending order of forms as we move across the neck and up a step with every pass across. The scale degrees are presented in order of ascending 4ths.
When going across the neck and up, there are five chord forms that do not fit within the key separating zones. The word “skip” indicates that below:

  • Zone 1: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 2: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 3: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 4: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 5: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 1: VII dim, III min, VI min, II min, V maj, I maj, IV maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip

Here, chords by zone is given for C major key, starting with zone one and ending at zone one octave up. When going across the neck and up, there are five chord forms that do not fit within the key separating zones. The word “skip” indicates that below:

  • Zone 1: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 2: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 3: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 4: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 5: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip
  • Zone 1: B dim, E min, A min, D min, G maj, C maj, F maj, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip

Here, the order of chord forms by zone is given, starting with zone one and ending at zone one an octave up. Note that the chord forms that are not part of the key and thus skipped are displayed in italics. Also note the complete regularity of chord forms when presented this way.

  • Zone 1: f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1
  • Zone 2: f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3
  • Zone 3: f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5
  • Zone 4: f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2
  • Zone 5: f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4
  • Zone 1: f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f1
